Is LED landscape lighting better than halogen?
For nearly every residential system, yes. LED fixtures draw a fraction of the energy of halogen, last significantly longer, and hold up better through New Jersey weather. The difference shows up three ways: in the light itself, in the operating cost, and in how rarely you think about the system at all.

What's wrong with an older halogen system?
Most halogen and high-voltage landscape systems still running in New Jersey went in 15 to 20 years ago, and it shows. They are dim, energy-hungry, and expensive to maintain — frequent bulb changes, aging connections, and a look that has slowly gotten worse as output faded and landscaping matured around the fixtures.
None of that is a repair problem. It is a generation problem. The technology under the system is what is aging out.
What do you actually gain from an LED conversion?
The difference is visible from day one: brighter coverage, better color, cleaner installation. Behind the visible change, the system draws a fraction of the energy, needs far less bulb work, and becomes controllable in ways a halogen-era system never was.

What happens to the transformer during an upgrade?
It gets evaluated, and in most conversions upgraded. LED fixtures draw far less power than the halogen fixtures they replace, so the transformer is resized to the new load — and we size transformers with headroom, so there is capacity to add zones later without another swap.
The transformer is also where modern control lives. Upgrading it is what unlocks programmable timers and smart control of the whole system.
Can existing wiring and fixtures be reused?
Sometimes — it depends on condition, and the walk-through is where that gets answered honestly. Corroded connections and damaged runs are behind a large share of system failures, so aging wire gets assessed rather than assumed. Our upgrade work includes rewiring and cleanup of aging runs where they need it.
Fixtures are usually the part being replaced: the conversion swaps outdated fixtures for premium low-voltage LED units built for the weather they will live in.
What controls come with a modern LED system?
More than the mechanical dial timer your halogen system probably has. Modern systems run on programmable and astronomical timers — which track dusk as it shifts through the year — and smart controls that put the whole system on your phone: schedules, zone-by-zone brightness, everything.

Do LEDs look as warm as halogen?
Modern ones do. Early LEDs earned a reputation for cold, blue light, and it stuck long after the technology moved on. Today's fixtures come in warm color temperatures that read the way halogen did — without the heat or the energy draw.
Color is part of the design conversation, and night focusing is where it gets dialed in: every fixture aimed and dimmed after dark, so the finished system is judged by what it actually looks like at night.
What are the signs it's time to upgrade?
Aging systems announce themselves. If more than a couple of these sound familiar, the system is asking for a conversion rather than another round of repairs.
