What is downlighting and moonlighting?

Downlighting and Moonlighting is one of the landscape lighting services we install across New Jersey. Downlighting places a fixture high above the ground and aims it downward, so the light falls on a lawn, patio or path from above rather than washing up a wall — moonlighting is the same technique used specifically from within a mature tree canopy.

How do we install it?

Fixtures are hung high in the canopy, thirty feet or more when the tree allows it, so the beam has room to break through the branches into dappled pools rather than a single flat disc.

Aim is set from the ground looking up, then reset from the ground looking down after leaves have moved, because a fixture set only from a ladder catches every mid-summer breeze wrong.

Neutral-white lamps read as convincing moonlight on a cool night, while warm-white lamps read as porch light and break the illusion the technique exists for.

Mounting hardware uses tree-safe straps that expand with the trunk, never lag bolts, because a healthy tree grows over a bolt within a decade and the fixture is lost with the branch.

Cable runs down the trunk in a straight vertical stripe on the side facing the house, tucked into the bark furrow, so the wire disappears from the primary viewpoint.

On roof-mounted downlights the fixture sits inside a hooded canopy rather than behind a flush lens, because a bare lens throws a bright glare-source into whatever upstairs window looks its way.

Fixture spacing under a canopy is chosen against the shadow pattern the tree already casts in daylight, so the night pattern reads as a slower version of a familiar one.

Every canopy install returns for a service visit the following season, since leaf-out changes the beam pattern more than any other single variable on the property.

What does a bad install look like?

A downlight aimed at the pool below without a shielded lens. Swimmers look up into a bright dot from any angle in the water, and the pool reads as backlit rather than illuminated.

Lag bolts driven into a mature trunk to carry the fixture. Within a few seasons the tree grows over the head, the fixture cannot be reset without cutting, and the cambium takes the damage.

Moonlighting attempted from a young or thin-canopied tree. The beam reaches the ground undiffused and the effect reads as a spotlight aimed at the lawn rather than as natural moonlight.
