What is pool and water feature lighting?

Pool and Water Feature Lighting is one of the landscape lighting services we install across New Jersey. Pool and water feature lighting treats the water and its surround as one composition, lighting the deck, the coping and the planting around it rather than only the pool shell.

How do we install it?

Fixtures around the coping are aimed away from the water line, because light bounced off a moving surface throws glare straight back at seated guests.

Anything near water is held to the clearances and bonding the electrical code requires, which is checked on site rather than assumed from a plan.

Surrounding planting and hardscape are lit so the water reflects something worth reflecting, since a dark surround gives the surface nothing to hold.

Warm, low output around seating areas, because the eye adjusts to the darkest thing in view and a bright fixture undoes the whole surround.

In-water fixtures are matched in color temperature to the surrounding land fixtures, because two whites meeting at the coping edge read as a color error.

Water features such as bubblers and sheer descents are lit from below the falling water, since a source above the flow washes out into the sheet.

Submerged lenses are checked for calcium scale at each service visit, as film on the front glass drops output by a visible amount within a year.

Pool lighting is wired to the same schedule as the surround, so the water does not sit lit for an hour after the patio has closed for the night.

What does a bad install look like?

Lighting only the water and leaving the deck dark. The surface glares, the edge disappears, and the step out of the pool becomes the least visible thing there.

Color-change LEDs cycling through blue and green around a spa. The moving hue makes the water look chemically off, and guests in the tub read every skin tone wrong.

A fixture aimed across the pool at seated guests. Wave motion refracts the beam directly into their eyes on every ripple, and no umbrella adjustment fixes it.
