What is uplighting for trees and shrubs?

Uplighting for Trees and Shrubs is one of the landscape lighting services we install across New Jersey. Uplighting places a low-voltage fixture at or below grade and aims it up through a tree's canopy or a shrub's mass, so the plant reads as a lit form after dark instead of a silhouette.

How do we install it?

Beam angle is chosen from the plant, not the fixture catalogue: a narrow spot for a columnar evergreen, a wide flood for a spreading maple.

Fixtures sit far enough back that the beam catches the canopy rather than scorching the trunk, then get re-aimed after dark on the same visit.

Mature specimens usually take two or three fixtures at different angles, because a single source flattens the crown into a disc.

Low-voltage LED on a buried run, so the fixture can be relocated as the plant grows without re-trenching the bed.

The most interesting side of a tree from the primary viewpoint gets the strongest source, since a fixture placed for symmetry rarely reads as balanced.

Fixtures aim across the canopy rather than through it, which lifts the underside of the leaves and reveals the branching structure behind them.

Leaf litter is cleared from the fixture bowl at each service visit, because a lens under oak litter throws a dim brown wash instead of a clean beam.

Directional in-grade fixtures with a shielded lens suit lawn positions, where a staked fixture would take a mower blade within a season.

What does a bad install look like?

Aiming a single bright fixture straight up the trunk. It blows out the bark, leaves the canopy dark, and throws glare at anyone standing in the yard.
