What is corroded or damaged wiring?

Corroded or Damaged Wiring is one of the lighting maintenance & repair services we install across New Jersey. Corroded or damaged cable is the most common cause of a landscape system degrading gradually, and it usually appears at joints and at the points where tools reach the ground.

How do we install it?

Damage is located by testing the run in sections rather than by digging the whole line, which narrows the fault to a span before any excavation.

Bed edges, tree bases and irrigation heads are inspected first, since those are where edgers, spades and augers actually reach the cable.

Damaged spans are replaced rather than patched, because a repair sleeve on already corroded conductors fails again at the same spot.

Reburied cable is routed clear of the bed edge so the next round of maintenance does not cut it in the same place.

Direct-burial connectors are replaced rather than reused wherever a run is opened, since the seal on a used connector is compromised the moment it has been separated.

The cable path is marked at the surface before excavation, so probing tools stay clear of the run they are trying to expose.

Voltage drop across a suspect span is measured under full load, because a section with heavy corrosion still passes a resistance check with the fixtures unpowered.

New runs are pulled with a service loop at each fixture, so a later cut or splice does not force the whole run to be reworked.

What does a bad install look like?

Taping a nicked cable and burying it again. Water tracks along the conductor under the tape, and the fault reappears further down the run.

Cable stapled to a wooden fence rail for an above-grade run. Sun and freeze cycles crack the jacket within two seasons, and the conductors corrode along the whole length.

A run buried directly under the drip edge of a downspout. Every heavy rain saturates the same narrow band of soil, and the jacket fails on schedule at the same spot each year.
