What is timer and photocell issues?

Timer and Photocell Issues is one of the lighting maintenance & repair services we install across New Jersey. Timer and photocell faults show up as a system that runs at the wrong hours or refuses to switch at all, and they are diagnosed separately from anything wrong with the fixtures themselves.

How do we install it?

The controller is tested in manual mode first, which separates a control fault cleanly from a supply or cable fault.

A photocell is checked for what it can actually see, since one sited where the system's own fixtures reach it will cycle itself on and off.

Astronomical settings are verified against the property's real location, because a controller left on a default location drifts noticeably from local sunset.

Backup power for the controller's clock is checked, as a failed internal cell resets the schedule silently after every power interruption.

The photocell is bagged with an opaque cover in daylight as a quick field test, since a cell that fails to switch under a hood is a component fault rather than a wiring one.

Photocells rated for outdoor duty are chosen with a heat-tolerant sensor, because a cell facing western sun ages faster than one shaded through the afternoon.

The load contact rating is verified against the LED load it now switches, because contacts sized for old incandescent loads can weld shut under LED inrush current.

An astronomical timer and a photocell are not layered as a series backup, since one waiting on the other is what produces a system that never comes on at all.

What does a bad install look like?

Mounting a photocell where the system's own light falls on it. The lights switch on, the cell sees them, and the system hunts on and off all evening.
