What is transformer failures?

Transformer Failures is one of the lighting maintenance & repair services we install across New Jersey. A transformer failure takes out every fixture downstream of it at once, and it is distinguished from a cable fault by whether the loss follows a zone or follows a run.

How do we install it?

Output is measured at each tap before anything is dug up, since a dead tap and a cut cable present identically from the far end.

Connected load is compared against the unit's rating, because a transformer that keeps tripping is often being asked to carry more than it can.

Internal protection is checked before the unit is condemned, as a tripped breaker inside the housing looks exactly like a failed transformer.

The cause is established before replacement, otherwise a new unit inherits whatever overload or short killed the previous one.

The primary side is verified with a known-good meter before the secondary is opened, because a tripped upstream breaker mimics a failed transformer exactly.

Replacement units are chosen with the same terminal arrangement as the original where possible, since re-landing every run is what turns a two-hour swap into a full day.

The property GFCI history is reviewed before commissioning a new unit, as a repeatedly tripping outlet indicates a leakage path that will bring down the new transformer too.

The housing interior is checked for insect or rodent damage, since a nest across the terminals is a common cause of a sudden failure on an otherwise healthy system.

What does a bad install look like?

Replacing the transformer without finding what killed it. If a shorted run caused the failure, the replacement fails too, usually within days.

A larger transformer dropped in place because the old one kept tripping. The shorted run that was tripping it now carries more current and burns the cable insulation instead.

A replacement wired for a different secondary voltage than the fixtures require. Every LED on the property sits above rated voltage and fails in the order of its distance from the unit.
