What is water-damaged connections?

Water-Damaged Connections is one of the lighting maintenance & repair services we install across New Jersey. A water-damaged connection is a buried joint that has taken on moisture, corroding the conductors inside and producing resistance that dims or kills everything downstream of it.

How do we install it?

Suspect joints are opened and inspected rather than tested in place, since a corroded connector can still pass a no-load voltage check.

Replacement joints are gel-filled connectors rated for direct burial, which exclude water rather than merely resisting it for a season.

Wire nuts and tape are removed wherever they are found below grade, because neither is designed to sit in wet soil.

Joints are relocated above the water line where the grade allows, which puts the most failure-prone part of the run somewhere it can drain.

Joints are grouped at a single access point per zone where the layout allows, so a future problem can be inspected without opening the whole run.

Silicone-filled connectors are matched to the wire gauge, because a connector oversized for the conductor leaves a void the silicone never fills.

Insulation resistance is measured to ground on each segment, since a conductor with a compromised jacket reads leakage long before the fixture visibly fails.

The male and female sides of a factory splice are oriented so strain relief carries any pull, which stops the conductor working out of the barrel over freeze cycles.

What does a bad install look like?

Remaking a wet joint with a wire nut and electrical tape. It reads as fixed on the day and corrodes back to the same fault by the next season.

A splice buried in a low spot that fills after every rain. The joint sits in a puddle for days, and corrosion advances even between apparent faults.

Heat-shrink used as the only weather seal on a buried joint. The shrink handles the moment of installation and admits water at the ends within a season.
