What is transformer upgrades?

Transformer Upgrades is one of the outdoor lighting upgrades services we install across New Jersey. A transformer upgrade replaces the low-voltage supply feeding a landscape system, sized deliberately above the current connected load so the system has capacity left for later additions.

How do we install it?

The new unit is sized against measured load with real headroom left over, not fitted exactly to what happens to be connected today.

Multiple taps are used so long runs can be fed at a higher voltage while short runs stay at the standard output.

Zones are split across separate circuits at the transformer, which means one fault takes down a zone rather than the whole property.

The unit is mounted at the height and clearance its housing requires, away from irrigation spray and where its own vents stay clear.

Stainless steel or powder-coated enclosures are chosen for exterior sites, because a painted mild-steel housing rusts through at the door hinge within a few winters.

Primary and secondary conductors enter the housing through separate glands, so a moisture path along one lead cannot short both sides inside the enclosure.

The unit is sited so the primary cord reaches a dedicated GFCI receptacle without an extension, since a stretched cord along a wet foundation is the failure point everyone forgets.

Terminal torque is checked at commissioning and recorded, as a loose lug heats under load and eventually welds the wire to the tap.

What does a bad install look like?

Sizing the replacement to exactly today's load. The first added fixture pushes it over, and every existing fixture on the run dims at the same time.

A unit mounted on a north wall where snow drifts against the vents. Summer service finds the housing rusted through at the fins, and the internal breaker corroded shut.

Multiple long runs landed on one tap because the installer did not want to open more terminals. Voltage sags across the shared conductor on a full-load evening, and every zone dims together.
